Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE-M (LTE Cat M1) belong to the Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) and are perfect for applications with low data consumption. Their low energy consumption, high penetration, and long-range capabilities make them unique technologies.

Designed for low data usage applications

To minimize power consumption, three different power-saving functions are utilized: PSM (Power Saving Mode), LP TAU (Long Periodic TAU), and eDRX (Extended Discontinuous Reception).         When used in combination, these functions can maximize energy savings and battery life.

NB-IoT was developed specifically for stationary low-power sensors. It is a narrowband radio technology with a transmission bandwidth ranging from 180 kHz to a maximum of 200 kHz and significantly lower energy consumption compared to GSM, UMTS, or LTE standards. Its high penetration enables data transmission through thick walls, such as those found in basements, underground garages, or ducts. The data rate is limited to a maximum of 250 kilobits per second (download and upload) and can only transmit data; it is not designed for voice or SMS. NB-IoT has low latency and is less suitable for real-time data transmission. Occasionally, the initially most cost-effective solution may not be the best one for a specific use case.

LTE-M (also known as LTE Cat M1) combines the benefits of LTE and NB-IoT. Unlike NB-IoT, LTE-M allows for networked mobility and can maintain connectivity even as the device moves across multiple mobile cells. This makes LTE-M more suitable for applications that require mobility. It is ideal for use cases in wearables, e-health, and smart tracking, where NB-IoT may not be the best fit. Choosing the right connectivity solution is key to a successful IoT project. While cost-effectiveness is important, the transmission technology should be carefully chosen. As a supplier of IoT infrastructure, having a reliable partner is essential. Please provide some brief information about your project so we can determine the best-suited technology for your needs.
